2023-24 Viewbook: New Features and a Return to Print Format

With students back on campuses, the 2023-24 UCEAP Viewbook has returned to a printed piece that can be handed out at study abroad fairs and events.
An online version of the viewbook also provides another way for students, parents, and guardians to learn about study abroad and UCEAP.
You’ll find this year’s Viewbook online in mid-September. Updated and new features include:
  • Program listings: Students can find programs available in each region and country along with details that are pulled from the At a Glance cards on program web pages.
  • Study Abroad Pathway: A timeline runs through the steps students will need to take to study abroad.
  • Scholarship tips: Students can find out scholarship deadlines as well as advice on completing scholarship applications.
  • Support information: The viewbook helps students understand that they’ll receive guidance for Diversity, Equality, Inclusion, and Accountability concerns.
  • Housing options: Recognizing the importance of where students will stay, housing information helps students know what to expect.
  • Photography: Updated images emphasize the student experience of study abroad.
  • Student testimonials: Student voices offer new perspectives on study abroad.
  • A tear-out planner helps students narrow down options when they explore programs. They can take the planner to meetings with campus study abroad advisors.
Feedback from students, campus advisors, and Systemwide Office staff was invaluable in guiding this year’s updates to the UCEAP Viewbook.

UC Berkeley Chancellor Visits Yonsei University

Yonsei University welcomed UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ and her delegation to South Korea in September.
Chancellor Christ and Yonsei University President Seoung-Hwan Suh enjoyed tea while talking about study abroad. The chancellor also attended a lunch with 40 study abroad students. Yonsei University is a private research university set on the former site of a royal palace. Referred to as one of the SKY universities, Yonsei University is among the three most prestigious schools in South Korea.
Yonsei University also has one of the most beautiful campuses. Recently renovated, the modern and historical buildings are surrounded by various gardens, fountains, and monuments. The main quad area resembles an Ivy League university with gothic stone buildings.
UCEAP offers Yonsei University and Yonsei University Summer programs.

Systemwide Office Staff Dive into Sustainability Efforts

The UCEAP Systemwide Office participated in California’s Coastal Cleanup Day—the largest volunteer effort in the state designed to protect the coastline. It was a great way to give back to the ocean, beaches, and creeks that make Santa Barbara County—including the community of Goleta—so magical. The gist was to get outside together, take in nature, and, while doing so, remove debris.
“Helping to maintain our coastal ecosystem supports the UC’s sustainability goals,” said Lance Heather, director of facilities and administrative services at UCEAP, who added that this September was the first time UCEAP has participated in the Coastal Cleanup initiative.
“Over 294,000 pounds of trash and an additional 48,000 pounds of recyclables were removed statewide,” Heather said.
In November, the UCEAP Systemwide Office had a chance to focus on sustainability and the environment with a tour of The ReSource Center, Santa Barbara County’s state-of-the-art facility that sorts and removes recyclables at its landfill.

The facility’s Education Center offers a unique, first-hand, behind-the-scenes experience of the trash and recyclables sorting operations.
The tour included a chance for the 10 participants to visit the Tajiguas Landfill.
Stay tuned for more opportunities in Santa Barbara to learn about sustainability next year.

Fall Internship Awards Honor Five Students

Five students received fall Internship Awards for their exceptional internship experiences on study abroad with UCEAP.
Zibaa Adil, UC Los Angeles, Field Research and Internship, Paris, with an internship for a human rights organization in France.
“This internship was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I am eternally grateful to have had the opportunity to meet everyone that I did, including the families we served, my team members, and other passionate individuals working for Utopia. I created connections and fostered conversations that I will continue to carry with me through my final year at UCLA and beyond.”
Mackenzie Berwick, UC Berkeley, Free University Berlin with an internship for a human rights organization in Germany.
“My focus on public policy and law has prepared me to think heavily about the permanent structures and defining tools that we must abide by and that we can apply to create justice and more equitable policy. I am still in the midst of finding a career path that would let me integrate all of these foci but working at Amnesty International as a researcher has been valuable in clarifying that search in some aspects.”
Hanna Franchi, UC Irvine, Global Studies, Geneva, with an internship for an intergovernmental organization in Switzerland.
“Career-wise, my time so far at the SDG Lab has exposed me to contemporary dialogues in diplomacy, pathways in diplomacy, contemporary concepts on sustainability, as well as the importance of connections to the international world. Being given a test-run at one of my dream jobs cemented my passion for diplomacy. Such an environment propelled my interest in the future of sustainable development and was the push I needed to realize my goals are achievable.”
Olivia Pritikin, UC San Diego, Yonsei University with a marketing/social media internship in South Korea. “Another goal I had was to learn about the industry of marketing in Korea. I certainly did this as I have a whole new outlook on consumer mindset and business public relations when it comes to marketing from working within the k-beauty industry.” Virginia Villalta, UC Irvine, University of Bologna with an internship in public health in Italy.

“This internship opportunity has shown me that I love to travel, and I love working in clinics and in the medical field. If and when I become a doctor in obstetrics and gynecology, I want to work abroad helping underprivileged women receive reliable care. If there is one thing Sokos has reinforced in me, it is that health is a human right for everyone, no matter the circumstance.”

The series kicked off in October with The Path to Global Learning: Study Abroad & Away for Undocumented Students, hosted by UC Davis. On November 14, UCSC and UCSC African American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC) hosted The ABCs of Global Learning for ABC Students. On November 15, UC Berkeley hosted First But Not Last: Study Abroad for First Generation Students.

        UCEAP and University of Barcelona Celebrate 50 Years

        This year marks the 50th anniversary of UCEAP and University of Barcelona partnering in international education. Since then, about 3,500 UC students have studied at the University of Barcelona.
        UCEAP Executive Director and Associate Vice Provost Vivian-Lee Nyitray joined University of Barcelona Rector Joan Guàrdia in Barcelona to celebrate the milestone.
        Vivian-Lee Nyitray recalled the history of the collaboration between UCEAP and the University of Barcelona. "Fifty years ago, when the collaboration between the two universities began, students arriving at the University of Barcelona with the UCEAP were enrolled in the Faculty of Philology,” she said.
        Now students can join any of the University of Barcelona's degree courses. During the current academic year, about 350 UCEAP students are studying at the university.
        UCEAP programs at the University of Barcelona include University of Barcelona and, for the first time, Barcelona Summer.

        Campus Outreach Project Guides Students Through Scholarship Applications

        UC Riverside’s Education Abroad Office launched a study abroad scholarship outreach initiative during summer 2023. The effort, nicknamed the Study Abroad Scholarship Series for SoCal Students, was spearheaded by Sonja Lind, assistant director of Education Abroad, and Program Advisor Katharine Fitzgerald.
        The high-impact series offered virtual meetings to students eligible to apply for two national study abroad scholarships: the Gilman Scholarship Program and Fund for Education Abroad scholarships.
        Across seven sessions, 26 students worked on scholarship essay prompts, brainstormed ideas for their responses, and revised and edited text. Students provided peer feedback to help others polish their essays. The final meeting was an in-person celebration of the students’ scholarship submissions. This project was a multi-campus effort. Sonja and Katharine collaborated with colleagues across campuses and institutions, including Kelly Zuniga at UC Los Angeles, Courtney Gross at CSU Channel Islands, and Katie Roller DiDonato at Academic Studies Abroad. Students from UCR, UCLA, and Chapman University attended these sessions. A scholarship kit with communication templates and a slide deck helped make the initiative a success across the campuses.         New Marketing Survey Reveals UCEAP Students Favor Social Media for Communications

        A new marketing survey conducted by the UCEAP Research team polled study abroad returnees from summer and fall 2022-23. The survey asked them questions about communication practices and engagement with UCEAP.
        Here are some key highlights from the survey results, which underscore just how important the role of social media and web presence is to UCEAP students:
        • 52% of respondents said they recalled hearing about UCEAP through a website.
        • First-generation college students were more likely to cite social media as their first exposure to UCEAP.
        • 92% of respondents said they actively use Instagram.
        • More than 50% of respondents said they use YouTube and TikTok, with TikTok being more popular among first-generation college students.
        • 59% of respondents said they felt the UCEAP website was somewhat easy to use.
        • 42% of respondents said they would be interested in contributing to the UCEAP website, blog, or social media channels.

        Giving Tuesday Exceeds Goals for Scholarships and the Museum Access Fund

        The 2023 Giving Tuesday campaign exceeded its donation goals on Nov. 28. With the support of 50 alumni and staff members, the effort raised $6,027, topping the $6,000 target.
        The donations will support the Museum Access Fund, the Guardian Scholarship, and the UCEAP Memorial Scholarship Fund.
        Museum passes allow students to experience local museums they would not otherwise visit. The Guardian Scholarship provides support to former or current foster youth going on a UCEAP study abroad program. The UCEAP Memorial Scholarship Fund allows alumni, staff, faculty, and friends of UCEAP to have a lasting impact on UCEAP students with a demonstrated financial need.

        2023 UCEAP Undergraduate Research Award Winners

        UCEAP celebrates the accomplishments of four UCEAP participants who excelled in their research projects conducted abroad.
        These are the four winners of the 2023 UCEAP Undergraduate Research Awards:
        Francesca Fee (Aquatic Biology, UC Santa Barbara) researched the density of microplastics in seagrass beds—an important food source and habitat for marine life off the eastern coast of Australia—while participating in the Marine Biology & Terrestrial Ecology program. Peter Palombi (Conservation and Resource Studies, UC Berkeley) researched the environmental effects on a previously undescribed predatory fungus gnat species while participating in the Tropical Biology and Conservation program.
        Derica Su (Psychology, UCLA) critically analyzed understandings of suicide risk for adults on the autism spectrum while participating in the Summer in Cambridge program. Alice Xie (History of Art and Statistics, UC Berkeley) studied Sino-foreign interactions through the lens of 19th-century picturesque depictions of Canton (Guangzhou), China while studying at the University of Bordeaux.
        The awardees’ projects were selected based on their level of scholarship, innovation, use of site-specific knowledge or resources, impact on the awardee, and faculty recommendation. Recently, Alice, Derica, and Peter presented their research at the annual UC Study Abroad Conference.

        Survey Spotlights Parent and Guardian Influence on Study Abroad

        The Parent/Guardian Survey helps UCEAP to better understand how parents and guardians influence students’ study abroad decision-making and experiences as well as the factors and concerns that are important to parents related to those experiences.
        Parents of summer and fall 2022-23 participants were invited to participate in the Parent/Guardian Survey in late summer 2023. Of the 3,999 individuals invited, 392 responded (10% response rate) and 355 completed the entire survey.
        Highlights from the survey results include:
        • 84% of parents/guardians encouraged their student a lot or moderately to study abroad.
        • Parent/guardians were most likely to help their students with finances (78%), travel arrangements (71%), and passport and/or visa applications (40%).
        • The top study abroad preparation or experience concern among parents/guardians is safety (59%), followed by health (22%).
        • Parents/guardians anticipated students to gain cultural (96%) and personal (87%) learning experiences while abroad.
        • The areas parents observed with the most learning gains were personal (83%) and cultural (80%) experiences.
        • The most positive ratings of observed student experience were in personal (72% “very positive”) and overall experiences (65% “very positive”).
        • 83% of parents/guardians are very likely or likely to recommend UCEAP.
        • 84% of parents/guardians encouraged their student a lot or moderately to study abroad.

        The AI grants program has been able to fund a total of $21,000 (up to $3,000 per grant) this year. AI grant projects focus on making education abroad an integral part of every student’s academic experience. Through these grants, faculty and staff collaborate with UCEAP on AI projects, including web pages on study abroad, degree plans that incorporate study abroad, and pre-approvals for coursework abroad.

        Taylor Allen

        Taylor Allen has joined UCEAP as a program assistant for the Madrid Study Center.
        Taylor earned bachelor’s degrees in International Studies and Spanish from Indiana University Bloomington. She participated in a semester-long study abroad program in Madrid, Spain, at La Universidad Complutense in 2016. Taylor also worked as a peer counselor for the Indiana University Bloomington education abroad program. After graduation, she moved to Madrid full-time and worked as an English teacher for six years.

        Puspita Hutajulu

        The Reciprocity team has welcomed Puspita Hutajulu as a new program advisor.
        Puspita was previously the administrative assistant and marketing coordinator at the UC Santa Barbara Education Abroad Program office. She is both a UC Santa Barbara and a UCEAP alumna, having studied abroad at the National University of Singapore for a year while obtaining her bachelor’s degree in Global Studies.

        Karis Kotschnig

        Karis Kotschnig has joined the Marketing, Communications, and Engagement team as the writing and editing student assistant.
        Karis is working towards her bachelor's degree in Communication at UC Santa Barbara with a minor in Applied Psychology. She plans on studying abroad next fall through UCEAP. She’ll be assisting with travel guides, newsletters, blog posts, website content, and social media.

        Brandt Kurowski

        In September, Brandt Kurowski came on board with UCEAP as senior software managing engineer (SSME).
        A graduate from Marlboro College in Vermont, Brandt has over 20 years of experience in web development and computer programming. Before starting at UCEAP, Brandt spent nearly 15 years as principal of Logic Branch Production in Vermont, where he provided expertise on software design and emerging technologies.

        UC Santa Barbara Geography Professor David López-Carr has joined UCEAP as a associate dean, joining Peter Graham in the position.
        David was an American Field Service student in Spain, a study abroad student in Chile, and a Fulbright Scholar in Ecuador and in Guatemala. David has traveled to over 70 countries and lived in Spain, Chile, Ecuador, and Guatemala. He speaks Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, and some rudimentary Q’eqchí Maya. He also has expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

        Lucia Martin Lagunas

        Lucia Martin Lagunas has joined the UCEAP Madrid Study Center as a program intern.
        Lucia is currently in her senior year of the Fine Arts major at Universidad Complutense of Madrid and completed her junior year at UC Berkeley as a UCEAP Reciprocity student. Due to her experience, she’s familiar with the exchange processes of these universities, and can help UCEAP students during their study abroad journey in Madrid, Spain.

        Jessica Manges

        Jessica Manges has joined UCEAP as the Ireland program officer.
        Jessica Manges has joined UCEAP as the Ireland program officer. Originally from Italy, Jessica moved to the US to complete her undergraduate degree in Psychology in Virginia and her master’s degree in International/Intercultural Education in Florida. She then spent several years in Japan teaching English before moving to Ireland, where she has since worked as a Studies Advisor at Wexford College.

        Alice Michel

        Alice Michel is now the executive director of Global Mobility at UC Santa Cruz.
        She’ll be overseeing both inbound and outbound mobility. Alice previously served as the Study Abroad director and Global Learning director for UCSC. Alice earned her degree in Anthropology and English from UCSC.

        Nathan Nateras

        Nathan Nateras has joined the UCEAP Finance team from the UC Santa Barbara Financial Aid Office where he has worked since 2022.
        Nathan has a lot of experience working with UCEAP as he specialized in financial aid award letters for students studying abroad through UCEAP. The UCEAP Finance team has worked closely with Nathan, so he is well known by all. His country assignments will be China, Ireland, Israel, Italy, and Italy/Spain multisite.

        Annie Price

        Annie Price has joined the UC Berkeley team as a study abroad advisor.
        Previously, Annie worked as a student services advisor for SSALLEX, where she supported visiting students in the Summer Sessions and Fall/Spring Extension programs. While earning her bachelor’s degree in English and Political Science from UC Berkeley, Annie spent a semester abroad at King’s College London, an experience that sparked her passion for international education.

        Ted Sengpaseuth

        Ted Sengpaseuth has joined the UC Berkeley team as a UCEAP study abroad advisor.
        Ted previously worked for UC Davis as a study abroad program coordinator. He also spent almost 10 years studying and working in Washington, DC—most notably supporting the US Department of State’s National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program. He holds a master's degree in International Affairs from George Washington University and a bachelor’s degree in French Language and Literature from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash. He is also a longtime student of French and Mandarin Chinese.

        STAFF DEPARTURES

        Glynis Kincaid

        Glynis Kincaid has left her role as a program coordinator at UC Davis to join the UC Santa Cruz Global Learning team as a program advisor.
        She is a graduate of NAFSA’s Academy for International Education and Diversity Abroad’s Global Education Diversity & Inclusion Program. She has worked in international education for over eight years. She graduated from UC Davis, where she earned her degree in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, with a minor in History.

        Carla Kist

        After 14 years with UCEAP, Carla Kist retired at the end of November.
        As the onsite program manager in the Netherlands, Carla managed a complex portfolio of programs and provided excellent support to students in several cities across the country. Carla had a positive impact on hundreds of UC students and was a wonderful colleague to the Systemwide Office team.

        Amy Veramay

        Amy Veramay’s last day as a UCEAP advisor with Berkeley Study Abroad was in August.
        Amy is pursuing a new opportunity as the North American international officer for Queen's University Belfast, Ireland, where she'll be recruiting students from across the US to attend Queen's for full degree programs and study abroad programs.

        IN MEMORIAM

        Peter Schiffman

        UCEAP wishes to honor and celebrate the life of Peter Schiffman, a lifelong supporter of education abroad.
        Schiffman was a field geologist, petrologist, and geochemist, and he drove the first semester program in UK-Scotland at the University of Edinburgh for STEM students. Under Schiffman’s direction and in the years since, the program has developed into a thriving and successful option for UC students. He was a trusted director, colleague, and lecturer, and his presence will be missed at UC Davis and by UCEAP staff abroad. Our thoughts extend to Schiffman’s family, colleagues, and students.
